SEO via Social Media

For businesses, Social Media is about more than obvious marketing. Thoughtful usage of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+, and countless other networks can be a tool for search engine optimization (SEO) on your website.

Social Media for SEO
Gaining follower ‘like’s on social media networks should be part of your business’s SEO strategy.

Everyone has the goal to be on the front page of Google’s search results. Of course, there are many SEO techniques one can apply – from how you compose the text on your site to the meta-tags you use and more – but don’t overlook the value of Social Media.

Links to your social media accounts should be prominently featured on every page of your site. Doing so makes it easy for visitors to further connect. Additionally, as you post across your various networks, referencing the content on your website shows the world (and search engine bots) that you have something of value to offer. Regularly updated blogs are perfect for social media sharing as are content marketing pages that share helpful tips and specialized insight.

However, there’s a fine line to Social Media. If you only talk about yourself, people won’t necessarily listen. Think in terms of a 10:1 ratio. For every ten items you share online, one should be about your business. Don’t you agree that endless commercials, whether on television or Twitter, are simply boring? Staying focused in your specialty is a good thing, but repetitive sales pitches won’t win over web audiences. Think about how you can help the online community. Share what they will find interesting and useful. Make yourself a resource.

The more helpful you are, the more people will click through to your website, “like” your comment, share your post, “+1” your message, and give various other versions of a positive response. The more chatter about your business and links to your business’s website, the more the Internet Gods will deem you worthy and the higher you will rank in search engine results.. And in the world of the web, isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

In the coming months, we’re going to discuss specific social media platforms. Teaming up with our partner company, K. S. Writing, we’re going to share how a business can best utilize each one.
